Rotaract originally began as a Rotary International youth program in 1968 at Charlotte North Rotary Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, United States, and has grown into a major Rotary-sponsored organization of over 9,522 clubs spread around the world with 291,006 members. It is a service, leadership, professional and community service organization for young men and women between the ages 18–30.
Rotaract focuses on the development of young adults as leaders in their communities and workplaces. Clubs around the world also take part in international service projects, in a global effort to bring peace and international understanding to the world.
“Rotaract” stands for “Rotary in Action” The Rotaract Club of Colombo is the first and the oldest Rotaract Club in Sri Lanka. Established in 1969 with the initiation of the Rotary Club of Colombo that continuous to develop effective leaders and promote responsible citizens.
Most Rotaract activities take place at the club level. Rotaract club holds formal meetings, special outings, social activities, discussions or visits to other clubs.
The avenues of service include Club Service, Community Service, International Service and Professional Development.
The Rotaract Club of Saegis was formed under the auspices of the Rotary Club of Reconnection which is the first Club in the world consisting of Rotary Scholarship holders.
The formation of the Club was the brain child of the Vice Chancellor, Maj.Gen Milinda Peiris. The Club was functioning as a provisional Club since the beginning of 2018 received the Charter Presentation from the Rotary Regional office in New Delhi in September 2018 with the mediation of the Rotary District Governor Sri Lanka
The Following members of the Saegis Rotaract Club were inducted at the Inaugural Installation ceremony that took place on the 25th November 2018 amidst a large gathering of Rotarians, Rotaractors, the Chief Guest Vice Chancellor of Saegis Campus, Major General (Retd) Milinda Peiris, Dr. Rohantha Athukorale, Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies, Mr.Thomas Benjamin, Manager of Student Affairs and Admin, Guest of Honour (Rtn. President PHF.Sanjeewa Fernando of Rotary Club of Colombo Reconnections, Rtn.G.S.Sylvester –Distrct Youth Service Chairman.Philip Mullegama- CEO Chandanalepa Group, Rtn. PP PHF Champa Perera Youth Service Advisor, District Rotaract Representative (DRR-PP Amjad Yusoof, District Guide Club Coordinator Rtr.Mohamed Salman, invited Rotarcators and guests. Rtr.Thaveesha Warusavitarne and Rtr Vishmi Gamage were installed as Charter President and Secretary respectively along with the Board of Directors for the Rotaract year 2018/19. Speaking at the occasion Rtn. Sylvers emphasised the fact that the Rotaractors should focus both on education and social service activities equally. Mr.Philip Mullegama made a strong motivational speech with his personal experience while the DRR confirmed that the Saegis Rotaract Club is the 75th Rotaract Club established in Sri lanka and requested the members to build up the Club further. The event was followed by Dinner and entertainment by DJ Music by Trev’D. The Grand raffle draw took place after the dinner and the winners were awarded with prizes.
